This post is specially catered for the vehicle owner who using High Intensity Discharge (HID) conversion that come with ballast. But first, let me introduce what does HID Ballast do?

What does HID Ballast do?

In order to keep your Xenon HID lights working properly, you’ll need a HID ballast. The ballast is an important part of your HID light setup and is essential if you want your Xenon HIDs to work properly. In this post we’ll cover what a HID ballast is, what it does, and why you need one.

What is a ballast?

A ballast is a crucial part of a fluorescent or HID lighting system. Ballasts have been used in lighting for decades, and more frequently in HID lamps as HID headlights have gained popularity.

In a fluorescent lighting system, the ballast provides the voltage needed to start the lamp and regulates the electrical current of the light once it is lit. Without a ballast, the lamp would draw too much power, causing it to burn out quickly – sometimes even within a few minutes. The ballast prevents this from happening and ensures you get the benefits of the lamp’s full lifetime.

What does a ballast do?

The first function of a ballast is to help your lamp start up quickly. When the lamp is turned on, the ballast provides a surge of higher voltage to the lamp. This helps establish an arc between two electrodes on the lamp, which is what causes HID bulbs to light up.

The other key function of a ballast is to keep your lamp running and make sure the output is steady. After the electrode arc is established, the ballast reduces the voltage and regulates the electric current. This ensures the light produced is even and steady, without flickering or fading.

HID ballasts

A HID ballast works in much the same way as any other ballast used in a fluorescent lighting system, but with a few key differences. In order to be safe and effective for use in a car, HID bulbs must be able to light up quickly, making the ballast extremely important.

The HID ballast has to be able to regulate the current in your HID lighting system very precisely. Too much power, and your lamp will die out faster and may actually explode. Too little power isn’t good for a HID lamp either, as it can damage the light, causing uneven lighting and a possible crack in the arc inside the bulb.

HIDs also need to be able to turn off and on quickly without overheating, which makes the ballast’s job even more difficult. The Xenon gas in the bulb needs time to cool down before it receives the strong, high-voltage current that turns the light back on. Special circuits are needed in HID ballasts to help restart the lamp quickly after turning it off.

Additionally, HID ballasts act as DC to AC converters. HID lamps cannot run on a DC current, as it can damage the bulb. Most available power sources for your headlights will be DC, so the ballast must convert this to an AC current.

But we all know that China HID ballast don’t really last, and is really depend on luck. A China HID ballast can last up to several years if you are lucky, else it will just spoil within few weeks or months.

In this video, I will share to you how to fix the broken HID ballast in less than $1.

High intensity discharge (HID) xenon bulbs are designed to last a long time – upwards of about 3,000 hours. When it does come time to replace them, however, there are a few things to keep in mind regarding your HID xenon replacement bulbs.

Which colour is best?

Unlike many other types of bulbs, HID bulbs come in a wide variety of colours. What you’ll notice when you go to the store is that the bulbs will be listed by a colour temperature. For example, you will see bulbs listed as 6000k, to upwards of about 140000k, with the K standing for Kelvin. This is an indication of the measure of how much colour is emitted by each of these bulbs. This is not as complicated as it may at first blush seem. Note that these ratings are an indication of where the bulbs fall on a scale of colour, not of heat. In other words, a bulb with a higher Kelvin rating will not burn any hotter than one with a lower rating. What is indicated by the rating is the colour that the light emitted will be. For example:

4000K rating: White light, with a slight yellow tint

Camry’s Projector with HID Headlamp

6000K rating: Bright, pure white light

12000K rating: Slight purple tint to a bright white light

Here’s where the waters get slightly more muddied. The higher the colour temperature rating of a xenon bulb, the less amount of light it will emit from your headlights once installed. This isn’t as noticeable in the lower ranges, but as you move up the colour temperature range you will notice a significant drop-off in terms of the amount of light emitted from the headlamps. Bear that in mind when you are shopping for replacement bulbs. If you want a purple lightbulb in your vehicle, for example, there is a concern that you won’t get the level of light emission (brightness) that you might require. The amount of light emitted by a bulb is measured in lumens. Typically, newer vehicles will be equipped with xenon bulbs that have a colour rating of about 4000K and a light output rating of somewhere in the neighbourhood of 3200 lumens.

Another concern when it comes to buying HID bulbs is the cost. They can be quite costly. The trick to finding a deal is much like shopping for anything else: you’ll have to shop around. Fortunately, with so many online outlets for buying car headlamp bulbs it’s easy to comparison shop to be sure you are getting a deal without even having to leave home. Be aware of the source you are shopping with, however, to be sure you are getting your bulbs from a reputable source. Otherwise, you could find yourself duped.

HID bulbs can be daunting to purchase, but with a few little tips and a little research you can successfully customize your car with the headlamps you want. And when it comes to installing them, it is always best to seek the help of a qualified mechanic with electrical experience. Otherwise, you could blow out the new bulb you are trying to install.
