New Car Safety Features Aimed At Reducing Injuries In Car Accidents

The average annual number of car accidents in the US stands at six million, with around 90 people losing their lives on the road every day – as reported by Driver Knowledge. Injuries are also a big problem that affect around three million people per year. Technology is playing a leading role in reducing both the number and severity of injuries, with everything from biometric sensors to automatic braking systems, lane departure detectors, and LIDAR sensors working together to create more connected, safer vehicles and driving zones. Top new tech also contains innovations aimed at reducing the impact of injuries sustained in crashes.

High-Strength Steel
Not all vehicles are equal when facing a collision. Car makers are continuously working to make their vehicles more crash-resistant, and one way to do so is through the use of high-strength steel. The Steel Market Development Institute estimates that over 65 current vehicles contain advanced high-strength steel, with a yield strength of over 550 megapascals. Harder steel absorbs more energy during an impact, reducing the risk of serious injury for drivers and pedestrians. Investing in a vehicle with sturdier material is a wise choice, considering the impact that accidents can have. Better Air Bags
Nearly 50% of all road deaths result from side-impact crashes. GM introduced the US’s first front-center airbag, which deploys between the driver and the passenger sitting next to him or her – in this way, both occupants are protected. The Mercedes-Benz S-Class vehicle, meanwhile, has airbags for passengers in the rear seats.

Reducing Car Speeds
Volvo has designed an ‘oncoming mitigation’ system that reduces the speed of a car when a collision with an oncoming vehicle is inevitable. It essentially brakes the car, slowing the speed down by 6.2mph. A collision at a lower speed reduces the likelihood of injuries. The system also activates safety systems such as belt tensioners, which prepare occupants for a collision. Alerts are also sent to the driver when a collision is likely to occur.

Millions of accidents occur every year on American roads. While not all crashes can be avoided, their effects can. Technologies such as oncoming mitigation systems, sophisticated airbag systems, and high-strength steel in car manufacturing are reducing the likelihood of serious injury and death.
