Sometimes, drivers must replace their tyres and King wheels as it becomes affordable, one at a time, but there are a few things to remember if that becomes a necessity. Read on for more details.
Get As Close As Possible
If you’re on a tight budget and can afford to replace only one or two tyres at a time, it’s crucial to go with tyres that are identical (or as close as possible) to the tyres that are already on the vehicle. This means that the size, internal construction, design, and tread pattern should be the same. They should be the same type as well; don’t mix all-season tyres with winter tyres; don’t mix standard tyres with run-flats, for example. But, why is that so important? We’ll discuss that below.
Why Tyre Matching Is So Important
Car and truck tyres are designed for different traction and handling properties, and they’re meant to work as a matched set, much like Niche wheels. Mixing tread patterns, designs, and sizes may bring loose handling, diminished braking and road-holding properties, and other issues that can be quite dangerous in emergency situations.
Replacing Tyres: Crucial Tips
If you must replace a pair of tyres and choose new ones that are the same model and brand as the existing set, the new tyres should be mounted on the rear of the vehicle. That may seem nonsensical to some, but think about this: If the new tyres are mounted on the front and you drive on a wet road, they’ll easily disperse water while the rear tyres may hydroplane.
Measuring Tread Depth
Tyres function at their safest when they have a tread depth of 1/16” or more. At that depth, you’ll be able to see the wear indicators, which are molded at right angles at the bottom of the tread grooves. Use a five-cent coin to check the tread depth if you’re in doubt.
Insert the coin into the tread groove. If the tyre tread reaches the top of the Queen’s head, your tread is deep enough to be minimally safe. However, it may be a good idea to start thinking about replacing your tyres.
