How to Take Care of Your New Electric Vehicle

Electric vehicles (EVs) have been described as the future of cars. It’s a well-deserved name – they are truly amazing and have many benefits to them. If you’re the new owner of an EV, you’re probably very excited.

You might want to jump straight into the fun things, like testing out your new car’s features, but it’s important to make sure you have the necessary knowledge to look after your vehicle. While it’s true that EVs require less maintenance than normal cars and generally don’t have as many issues, they still need to be taken care of to an extent. Here are some basic things you need to know about taking care of your EV.

Charge it

This may seem like a very basic thing to remember, but if you’re used to a normal car, the concept of charging a car might seem a bit foreign to you, and you’ll need to remind yourself to do it in the beginning, until you get into the habit of it. Consulting a supercharger map might be very helpful.

Be gentle on the battery

Your first instinct might be to keep your battery fully charged the whole time, but the truth is that this can put a lot of pressure on your battery. Instead, you want to only charge it when needed, and try to keep the battery level between 20% and 80% for the majority of the time, since lower than that means your battery will run down too quickly, and higher than that will strain your battery.

Do general maintenance

In order to keep your EV up and running as smoothly as possible, you want to perform monthly maintenance. Doing this will ensure that your car’s performance stays at the level you want it at, and you’ll also be able to diagnose problems much quicker, perhaps even before they become serious.

Don’t let it sit for too long

Just as with normal cars, keeping your EV parked for long periods is not great for its battery. If you don’t use your EV on a daily basis, try to take it out for short, frequent drives, even if it’s just around the block. If you have no choice but to leave it standing still for an extended period of time, you should prepare for it by charging your EV fully and parking it somewhere cool.

Get it serviced

EVs aren’t bulletproof or invincible. No matter how brilliant your car is, it will still need to be serviced. Servicing your car is important as it can help detect any problems with your car, replace any faulty parts and make sure that everything is working the way it should.

Replace the brake fluid.

You’ll need to replace your EV’s brake fluid at regular intervals. These intervals will depend on your car as well as your usage of it, so be sure to check your user manual or consult an expert to make sure you don’t put it off too long. Get your brake fluid checked often to see whether its time to replace it.
