How to DIY to Install the Toyota Vios Door Handle Covers

Tools needed:

  1. Full set of Torx screwdriver/Allen key (I used Allen key)
  2. Scrapper tool made of rubber with shape end, or you can wrap a cloth around a flat head screwdriver to avoid chipping the paint off
  3. A bar of mentos, to maintain your fresh breath

Front Door Handle Replacement

Left and right doors are the same; I started from driver seat first. You don’t need to remove the inner door panel.

  1. Open the door and spot for the black round stopper, pull it out with fingernail.

  2. The screw is easily spotted once removed, it is slanted 45 degrees.

  3. Loosen the screw fully, don’t worry it will not fell out. Once it is loose, pull the keyhole port towards you, you may need a scrapper for this.

  4. This is how it looks like. I guess I don’t need to teach you how to remove the plastic cover out, just push the clip on the straight surface at the side and force it out.
  5. Push the handle towards the keyhole port which has been removed, it will come out easily.
  6. When you install the handle back, make sure to push it fully in until you hear a clip sound. It may be a little tricky to screw back the keyhole, take your time to screw into the correct position. Remember to put back the black round stopper.

Rear Door Handle Replacement

  1. Be patient for this, this requires a lot of focus and time. First off, remove two screws from inner door handle and inside the door panel arm rest (highlighted in yellow), then remove the inner door panel, there are pins all around the bottom (highlighted in red); pull them out one by one with a little force. Once all are out, gently lift it up and the door panel is removed (highlighted in white).

  2. Now you need to remove the cables for inner door handle and power window, just pull the cable out for power window. While for the inner door handle, the best way is to remove all 4 clips around it. If you prefer to remove the hard cables (strongly not suggested unless you want to remove the inner door handle), take note that the one in white (hard metal rod) is for LOCK, and the one in green (soft, bendable metal rod) is for opening door (highlighted in yellow).

  3. Pull out the plastic which has black glue behind it; don’t pull out all the way, as long as it has enough space for you to reach the inside (highlighted in red).
  4. Next, remove 3 screws at the side of the door and the cable. The locker will drop after that, don’t worry, you have the space to put your hand in later.

  5. Have a peek into the cleavage, voila, you can spot the screw. Now, loosen the screw and pull out the cover. Replace the door handle. It may be a little tricky to screw it back, take your time to find the correct position; I spent 10 minutes to find the right spot.

  6. Re-installing the locker back is quite easy, just insert your hand to the space where you tear down the plastic, put into the position and screw back the three screws. Don’t left out the cable. Stick back the black glue. Refer step 1 and reverse the steps to install back the door panel.

Tips

  • Directions to remove door handle for all 4 doors are the same, the keyhole port (no holes for the back doors) is pulled out towards you, while the door handles are pushed to the left.

  • Another smart way to pull out your keyhole port, you can use 3M squeegee tool if you have it.

  • If you’re buying the L shape type of Torx screwdriver/Allen key, I would advise you to buy the set with a minimum length of 8cm. That’s how deep you need to insert it to loosen the screw at rear doors.
