Mercedes-AMG Took The Challenge Of Tuning The EQS And Has Now Delivered

Among all the models presented by Mercedes-Benz at this year’s Munich Auto Show, the EQS managed to get attention once again: the flagship sedan now combines its fully electric powertrain to the AMG sporty tuning in order to become quite an interesting option in the market.

Let’s cut to the chase: the AMG EQS uses two motors, one on each axle, that generate combined 649 hp of power and 700 lb-ft of torque. If you opt for the Dynamic Plus package, those figures go to 751 hp and 752 lb-ft and are helped by a fully variable 4MATIC+ all-wheel-drive system and a transmission with Boost function and Race Start mode. All that gear is enough to take the model from 0 to 100 kph in 3.4 seconds – top speed is electronically limited at 250 kph.

Handling is ensured by AMG’s air suspension and rear-axle steering, which rotates up to 9 degrees to help the car according to the situation. This system comes standard and was tuned by AMG with two pressure-relief valves like those of the GT 4-door Coupé. Braking is done by 6-piston front and single-piston rear calipers painted in red, but you can increase the car’s capacity even further by ordering the optional carbon-ceramic system.

While there is no official information on its range yet, Mercedes has revealed that a quick charging station can give it 300 km of range in just 15 minutes. Besides, the 107.8 kWh lithium-ion battery can be recharged with up to 300 kW from its own regenerative braking system. The driver can make use of that in five driving modes (six with the Dynamic Plus package) while enjoying the AMG Sound Experience, whose three modes optimize the car’s acoustics while using its speakers to simulate typical AMG engine sounds.

The cabin matches the car’s sportiness by using a combination of leatherette and microfiber with red stitching on the seats and Nappa leather on the steering wheel. The futuristic image, on the other hand, is preserved mostly by the famous Hyperscreen, the 56” digital dashboard made by a central 17.7” touchscreen and two 12.3” touchscreens, one for the driver and the other for the front passenger – the MBUX interface was updated with some AMG-badged displays. Genuine products bring a sense of exclusivity and luxury to many Mercedes-Benz models. Whether you’re looking for convenience, style, or performance – you can find Genuine tuning and performance parts at Mercteil.

Other interesting details are the AMG-badged accessories, such as steering wheel, pedals, and floor mats; special badges in the cabin, carbon-fibre trim on some components, and a long list of comfort and safety items – the list of options includes upgrading the rear seats with heated massaging operation.

Considering that it is impossible to stay indifferent to the original EQS’s external design, analysing its AMG variation is quite intriguing, to say the least. Not by the standard 21” or optional 22” wheels with numerous thin spokes or the glossy black paint used on the exclusive body kit components, but by the grille. Yeah, the front grille: Mercedes devised a new plastic panel designed to replicate the silver vertical strips of the famous Panamericana grille used on AMG models powered by internal-combustion engines.

Mercedes-Benz has undeniably gone the extra mile to balance sportiness with luxury and sustainability. It is understandable that it decided to simulate engine sounds and even a front grille as an effort to make the car palatable to old-school fans, but that actually is as futile as naming products “vegan meat” or “artificial leather”. Nevertheless, the truth is that the EQS has always had countless reasons to be desirable and the AMG version is expected to give it more. Now it’s time to hear you: would you choose it over an S 65 AMG?
