HKS Exhaust Tail Pipe (排气管) Upgrade Procedures – Complete Guide

Since there will be a lot curiosity of the muffler upgrade for the car, I decided to record the whole exhaust pipe upgrading process.

This is the first time that I ever upgraded my Toyota Vios stock Exhaust Tail Pipe (排气管) to HKS muffler, and I’ve recorded the whole process how the workshop perform the exhaust muffler upgrade service in the workshop.

Procedures of HKS Exhaust Tail Pipe (排气管) Upgrade on Toyota Vios

1. Jack up the car to allow access to the exhaust system
2. Loosen up the exhaust pipe connection, and diseemble the stock muffler for cut
3. Cut off the tail pipe from the stock muffler
4. Connect with new pipe after taken measurement – HKS muffler was put on the right location first, and measurement are taken to fill the gap
5. Welding process on the new cut pipe
6. Welding process on the HKS muffler with the new pipe
7. Welding process on the hooks of the HKS muffler
8. Black paint spray in the inner HKS muffler to looks sporty.

Effect on the car after upgraded the stock muffler to HKS muffler:

1. The acceleration of the car is smoother and the car is more powerful as well, in short the car performance has increased.  Not sure how many percentages of increase, but I feel it when driving the car!
2. Exhaust system sound roar way louder and deeper too!
3. Improved outlook of the car

How Muffler Upgrade Help to Improve Car Performance?

Below photo is showing stock muffler. The function of a Muffler or a Silencer in Vehicle is to cool the exhaust gases by expansion through it and to reduce the noise of outgoing gases. The exhaust gases must be discharged into the atmosphere with minimum restriction. The restriction in flow of exhaust gases causes back pressure.

Backpressure refers to pressure opposed to the desired flow of gases in confined places such as a pipe. It is often caused by obstructions or tight bends in a confined space such as an exhaust pipe.

Because of air resistance, friction between molecules, the term backpressure is misleading as the pressure remains and causes flow in the same direction, but the flow is reduced due to resistance. For example, a stock car exhaust system with a particularly high number of twists, bends, turns and right angles could cause lots of backpressure to the gases escaping the car’s engine therefore reducing the flow of the gasses – Source Wikipedia

Performance muffler is created to reduce the backpressure create by the muffler by providing smooth flow for the gasses to escape.

The drawback of increasing the car performance via the muffler upgrade, come with louder noise of the performance muffler too.
