If you are in the area of the Carolinas and are looking for a road trip to do with the family or your significant other, you can’t go wrong with a trip to the Biltmore. It’s 8000 acre estate features the grand home of the Vanderbilt family, in Asheville, North Carolina.
In 1888, George Vanderbilt was one of the most wealthy industrialists in the United States. He visited North Carolina and felt it was the perfect place for his family’s country estate. With a great deal of money, he set an army of builders and craftsmen to work for 6 years, to build a masterpiece of homes.
At the time it was the largest private residence in the country. It was built in a French Renaissance chateau style. It contains 250 elegant rooms. The home contains over four acres of floor space, including 35 bedrooms, 43 bathrooms, and 65 fireplaces. Modern additions include a winery and two inns. Various hotel packages include admission to the house, which is as interesting and grand as any museum. You can also choose to spend the night in the Vanderbilt’s own guest house.
While you are on your road trip, be sure to follow the great Smoky Mountain Parkway and see the Smoky Mountain National park, which is nearby. Spring and summer have lovely weather and will make for a lovely scenic drive.
