Painting my Toyota Vios, the original TRD wheels is always in my mind since 3 years back. Rather than changed to the low quality wheels made in Taiwan or Thailand, that might endanger the safety of the vehicle due to replica wheels are less rigid compared to original wheels.
This time, I going to share to you how I get my Toyota Vios, TRD sport wheels painted to sporty black color with colorful rubber spray film.
Rubber spray film is new technology paint spray where the paint coating can be tear off after the paint if we are dissatisfied with the effect. So I have no worry if the paint effect is not nice, I can always tear it off.
I bought 2 cans of Colorful Rubber Spray Film from Mr. DIY shop in Time Squares, Penang. Each bottle of can cost me only RM21.00. The price is affordable 🙂
Painting with Colorful Rubber Spray Film is very easy! User just have to assure the surface of the wheels is clean, no grease, no any other oily contamination and the wheel is 100% dry! The best of using rubber paint is, NO sanding prior painting is required!
Since I am getting my old, and worn out 2 set of Michelin XM2 tires to be replaced at Pitstop Michelin Tires shop, Penang. I am also getting their hands to help on the wheels painted using the Colorful Rubber Spray Film. They don’t charges labor cost for this DIY 🙂
Step by step to paint the Wheels
- Firstly, they removed the old Michelin XM2 tires from 4 set of wheels from the Toyota Vios and get the rims washed with soap.
- The wheels are let to dry by wiping it with dry cloves and expose under hot sun.
- Then, the Colorful Rubber Spray Film hard to mix the content evenly before we begin the color spray on the TRD Wheels.
- Next step, they spray the paint from the Colorful Rubber Spray Film for 3 layers on the TRD Wheels, with gap of each 10 minutes interval between each paint layer.
- Each TRD wheels are sprayed at least 3 layers with 10 minutes interval to allow the paints dry before proceed for next coat. High speed fans are switched ON, and the wheels were put below the hot sun beam to speed up the paint drying process.
Once the painting is completed, we assembled the new Michelin XM2 tires on to the wheels:
The effect is after changed the color of silver TRD wheels to black TRD wheels is AWESOME. The Toyota Vios GT Street now have sportier outlook with its black TRD wheels!
This is the cheap way to change my car outlook by with just RM42.00 (2 cans of Colorful Rubber Spray Paint). The black TRD wheels revitalized the outlook of the Toyota Vios GT Street to more sportier, and fierce appearance.
After the car equipped with Black TRD Wheels, every time I see my car I feel excited 🙂
Now I wan to monitor how long this Colorful Rubber Spray Film able to last on my wheels. Don’t forget to give me a “Like” at bottom of the post and share me your opinion!

here is the U.S. we have access to a couple brands of a similar product at most local retailers, “Plasti-Dip” being most well known due to time on market and now “Peel Coat” which is new to the game. I have just started experimenting with Peel-Coat, but so far it’s really nice stuff but has different properties, it lies much thinner and flatter, great if your doing a new item but sometime I use rubberized finish to hide small scuffs etc, so something to think about, the two products spray very differently but similar end result. I kind of came into Plasti-Dip by accident, I was really in vaping a couple years ago, you know the e-cigarettes with massive batteries screwed onto them, and was getting irritated spending so much and dropping them and beating them up all the time. So I saw this rubber coating at the store and thought it’d be perfect, which it almost was, just not for longevity. Anyhow, I was spraying all kind of crap at my house and had no idea that people were using this on cars/rims. Since I was doing handheld devices that needed a strong coating, I was spraying several coats of clear over the rubber, laquer or enamel to give the rubber some permanence, note enamel is generally better due to it being slightly more flexible, laquer will crack and chip under stress. Anyhow, long story short, I did my rims on my Scion tC, several coats of black, a couple coats of gold pearl and lots of clear with sanding in between. This was over two years ago and they are still amazing. We bought a new Veloster last weekend for my wife, in yellow, and hoping to do the rims in black tomorrow. Everyone who wants a custom look to their car should do this, you’d be amazed at how much simply adding black wheels enhances a cars look. My Scion is graphite color, when I get the motivation, I have five or six cans of white and silver flake for something different. I also commented because of the noise reduction comment, as I have a couple Kickers and a 2000w amp in the Scion, before sub install, I removed all carpet/paneling from inside of trunk, and laid down very thick coating of rubberized spray(prob about 8 cans). way more affordable option over “dyna-mat” for stereo installs. really worked great for acoustics and stopping the rattling/vibrations from inside of tail-lights and license plate, this would be awesome to do in an engine bay if ever you are replacing an engine, although I hope you don’t need to anytime soon.
Hi pal!
Thanks for your story! I appreciate that!
Indeed the color spray will peel off after 1-2 years, but the reapplication is easy and the color really enhanced my ride.
I hope to see you around agian, pal.
Hey mate,
Thanks for sharing, excellent piece of info you have written.
May I know what kind of enamel spray you used for the increased durability?
Hello Andy,
thanks for dropping by and sorry for the late reply as I am busying with other projects.
I am using the rubber color spray only for this “How to DIY to Paint Your Wheels with Colorful Rubber Spray Film”. Apparently, the rubber coating is still lasting even after a year!
Hey Kelvin, been following your blog for a while now. I’ve yet to see a review on reducing noises of the internal of the car, especially vios. I find that vios is noisy when driving at high speeds. Would like to see a review on that and ways to reduce the noise.
HI CZ,
thanks for drop by for the comment. Noise reduction in the car would be the next project.
If you have any tips about nice reduction, do share with me too 🙂
Great suggestion CZ, I too have been thinking about this.
I heard some VIOS owners 2007-2012 model, open up the inner roof and puts insulation foam to dampen the annoying noise when raining heavily.
I think the space around the engine can be improved as well. The challenge is to not use too much heavy material to add on too much to the car total weight.
Hi Andy,
yes, there is so much ways to improve the noise insulation in the car. I personally find that the engine bay, 4 doors, and floor are the great place to put the noise insulator materials to reduce the noise.
