Do you love cars? Do you also love money? Then wouldn’t it be cool to make money doing car stuff? Here are 7 ways in which you can turn your auto passion into cash.

  1. Sell Cars

Lots of people make money by selling their old car. Why not sell cars for a living? Private sellers can make a living through buying used vehicles and then selling them. The hardest thing about being a private seller is that you’ve got to buy vehicles before you sell them—you don’t need to buy many of them, but you should ideally have a small fleet. If you’re skilled at fixing up vehicles, you could buy run-down cars at a very cheap price and boost their value after repairs. Or, you can take out a large business loan and buy several used cars at once (also read our tips on how to get a low car payment).

A lot of people are sketched out by private sellers, and for good reason. Make yourself look like a legitimate business (because you are one) by creating a website and setting up Yelp pages so our satisfied customers can leave online reviews.

2. Rehabilitate Cars

You could make some extra pocket cash by fixing up used vehicles for their owners. Oftentimes, people inherit a used vehicle from their loved ones and they want to fix it up so they can drive it or just so they can have it for sentimental value. Sometimes, these folks don’t know how to rehabilitate old vehicles, or they don’t have the money to have it professionally done. That’s where you come in—if you’ve got the skillset.

Come up with estimates on how much the new parts and supplies will be, and then add in a little extra for labor—but don’t price significantly more than what they would at an auto mechanic. You could make a sizeable amount of cash and you might even generate positive word of mouth about your abilities.

3. Work on Cars

The safest way to make a career out of working on vehicles is to get a job as an auto mechanic. First you’ll need to get your auto mechanic certification, which will teach you how to do basic things, like installing a remote starter. It’ll also help you get a job at an auto shop. You could eventually start your own auto shop—buy your own facility, hire your own technicians, and pay yourself more. Ain’t that the American Dream for car enthusiasts?

4. Rent Out Cars

You could make a living renting out cars—this is similar to being a private dealer, but you’d be renting vehicles rather than selling them. You could rent out a wide variety of vehicles—sports cars for people attending their high school reunion, trucks for people who need to move furniture, or SUVs for people going on road trips.

There are plenty of liability risks that come with a rental car business, so make sure that you’re constantly doing maintenance on your fleet and always keep up on the latest property and casualty insurance news

5. Do Rideshare

Rideshare is the easiest way to make money by driving. If you have a vehicle that’s in good shape and cozy for guests to sit in, then sign up for a rideshare platform and make money transporting people around your area. Boost the amount of tips that you get by always having water bottles available for your passengers (buy in bulk from Costco) and by practicing safe driving. Driving rideshare is also a fun way to meet people from all different kinds of backgrounds. It’s best as a side hustle, but there are plenty of people who make a living by driving 8 or 9 hours per day.

6. Give Tours

Become a tour guide and give specialized tours around your local area. Tour groups might request that you transport them from place to place—another way to make money by driving people around. It’s most helpful if you have an SUV, but if you have a sports car then you could advertise that you’re giving “city tours in style.” This money-making idea is for a very niche crowd, but it might be right for you if you like showing off your area.

7. Race

Do you have a need for speed? Then make money racing vehicles. Not talking about NASCAR or about Fast and the Furious-style street racing. There are plenty of amateur racing circuits for those of you who have a supped-up vehicle and steely nerves.

Put your enthusiasm for cars to good use and get a little more money in your wallet today.
